He marries Sofia Akrami, a princess of sorts, and has a son, Amir. But his wife dies in childbirth, leaving him with a son he struggles to understand. The Father-Son Conflict Baba is disappointed in Amir's lack of athleticism and assertiveness. He wishes Amir were more like him. He confides to Rahim Khan that he feels something is missing in Amir. He does not know how to connect with his bookish son. The tension between them defines Amir's childhood. The Flight When the Soviet invasion makes life in Kabul impossible, Baba flees with Amir. He risks his life to protect a woman from a Russian soldier. He loses everything—his house, his business, his status. He arrives in America with two suitcases and a son. The American Years

The American Years The Gas Station Baba works as an assistant at a gas station in Fremont. He hates the work but refuses to accept charity. He buys a VW bus and starts selling used goods at the flea market. He becomes a familiar figure in the Afghan community, but he never adapts to American life. He misses the gardens of Paghman and the respect he once commanded. The Graduation When Amir graduates from high school, Baba is proud. He buys Amir a car and takes him to a bar, where he buys drinks for everyone. He tells Amir, "I wish Hassan had been with us today." It is a rare moment of vulnerability, hinting at the secret he carries. The Cancer Baba is diagnosed with lung cancer. He refuses chemotherapy, choosing to die on his own terms. He continues to work until he is too weak. He dies peacefully in his sleep, just after telling Soraya there is no pain. His death leaves Amir with a legacy of guilt and love, and the secret that will eventually drive Amir to seek redemption.
